Elgie Emile Bell, a dual heritage Black man born in London, 1948
Eldred faced repeated brutalisation in the streets and in the custody of the Metropolitan Police during the 1960s to 1980s. Throughout his life, he endured racial profiling, frequent stop-and-search incidents starting at the young age of 15, often under the SUS laws of the time. He also endured unjust imprisonment based on false, trumped-up charges, including evidence planting. While detained, Eldred was subjected to further violence by prison guards, notably within Wormwood Scrubs HMP. His experiences shed light on the systemic racism and abuse faced by individuals like him during that era and what still exists to this day.
While serving what is believed to be his final prison sentence, each lasting typically between 6-9 months, he had the opportunity to learn a musical instrument. Opting for the saxophone, he found solace in music, utilising it to occupy his time constructively amid challenging circumstances. Playing the saxophone became therapeutic for him, a cherished activity that he remained passionate about for years. His talent on the saxophone not only brought him personal joy but also resonated with others who admired his musical prowess.

Info on inmate's access to instruments:
Learning to play an instrument while incarcerated is possible, although the availability varies among prisons. Some facilities offer music programs to teach inmates instruments, forming bands, or participating in performances. Inmates may be allowed to obtain musical instruments based on their privileges. However, restrictions may apply, like prohibitions on certain instruments due to security concerns. In some prisons, privileges are tied to behavior and program engagement. Music programs aim to provide a creative outlet and potentially reduce re-offending rates post-release. Rehabilitation and integration into society are enhanced through musical activities, providing a positive learning experience and boosting self-confidence.
Prison policies, security considerations, and inmate behavior affect instrument access. Music programs offer skills for reintegration, possibly lowering the likelihood of re-offense.
Elgie Bell Elgie Bell's Program Related Investment Scheme (PRiS) SaX-Sound Project is for youths in young offenders' institution and adults serving in adult prisons who may be interested in learning a new musical skill in collaboration with Black Lives Matter UK Elgie Bell's PRiS sponsored by individual's monthly donations, where available
